WooCommerce vs Shopify in India: Which Is Better for Your Online Store?
If you're starting an online store in India, WooCommerce and Shopify are the two platforms you'll hear about most. Both can run a successful store, but they work very differently, especially when it comes to cost and control.
The key difference
WooCommerce is a free e-commerce plugin for WordPress. You host it yourself and own everything.
Shopify is a hosted platform. You pay a monthly subscription, and Shopify handles hosting and security.
Comparison for Indian stores
| WooCommerce | Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fee | Free (pay for hosting) | Monthly subscription |
| Transaction fees | Only your payment gateway's fee | Extra fee may apply if not using Shopify's own payments |
| Indian payment gateways | Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree, PhonePe and more | Supported, often via apps |
| Cash on Delivery | Built in | Supported |
| Customisation | Almost unlimited | Good, within platform limits |
| Content & blog | Excellent (it's WordPress) | Basic |
| Maintenance | You or your developer handle updates | Handled by Shopify |
| Ownership | Full ownership, move hosts anytime | Tied to Shopify |
Choose WooCommerce if...
- You want to avoid monthly platform fees and keep costs predictable
- You want full control over design, features and data
- Content and SEO matter: blogs, guides and landing pages alongside your products
- You already have a WordPress website
- You need custom features like B2B pricing, bookings or product configurators
Choose Shopify if...
- You want a fully hosted, hands-off platform
- You're comfortable with monthly subscription and app costs
- You don't need much customisation beyond themes and apps
Real costs over the first year
With WooCommerce, your running costs are mainly hosting, a domain and any premium plugins you choose, plus maintenance if you use a developer. With Shopify, you pay the monthly plan, and paid apps for features like reviews, filters or WhatsApp often add a noticeable amount each month. For many small Indian stores, WooCommerce works out cheaper over time, while Shopify saves time on maintenance.
Speed and performance
Shopify's hosting is fast by default. WooCommerce can be just as fast on good hosting with caching and optimized images. Cheap hosting is the main reason WooCommerce stores feel slow.
Our recommendation
For most small and growing Indian brands that want control and low running costs, WooCommerce is an excellent choice, especially when set up properly with a good host, Razorpay and a fast theme. If you want zero technical responsibility and don't mind the monthly fees, Shopify is a solid alternative.
