WooCommerce SEO: How to Rank Your Product and Category Pages
A practical WooCommerce SEO guide: keyword research, category page content, product titles and descriptions, product schema, duplicate content, site structure and speed.

On this page
- Map category keywords to category pages and specific terms to product pages.
- Add useful intro content to category pages and write unique product descriptions.
- Use product schema, control filter URLs and keep the store fast.
Paid ads and marketplaces bring sales, but organic search traffic is the channel that keeps working without a cost per click. Here's how to help Google find, understand and rank your WooCommerce store.
1. Research what buyers search
Buyers search at two levels: category searches ("organic spices online", "men's leather wallets") and product searches ("cold-pressed coconut oil 1 litre"). Map category keywords to category pages and specific terms to product pages.
2. Build a clear store structure
- Logical categories and subcategories that match how people shop
- Each product in one main category (avoid scattering it across many)
- Breadcrumbs so shoppers and Google understand the hierarchy
- Clean URLs like
/shop/spices/turmeric-powder/
3. Treat category pages as landing pages
Category pages often have the best chance of ranking for broader searches. Add a short, useful introduction (what's in the range, how to choose), a unique title and description, and FAQs where helpful. Many stores leave category pages as a bare grid of products and miss this opportunity.
4. Optimize product pages
- Unique descriptions: never copy manufacturer text used across the web
- Descriptive titles with key attributes (size, material, variant)
- Image alt text describing the product
- Reviews: fresh, genuine customer content that also builds trust
See also product page optimization for conversion tips.
5. Product schema
WooCommerce and SEO plugins add Product schema (price, availability, reviews), which can make your listings eligible for richer search results. Keep prices and stock status accurate. See schema markup explained.
Those ratings should come from genuine customer reviews shown on the page; see how to collect and display WooCommerce product reviews.
6. Handle duplicate and thin pages
- Filtered and sorted URLs (by price, colour) can create many near-duplicate pages. Keep them out of the index or canonicalised to the main category.
- Variations should normally live on one product page rather than separate near-identical products.
- Out-of-stock products: keep the page if it will return, and redirect it to the closest alternative if discontinued.
7. Speed and mobile
Stores are image-heavy and plugin-heavy. Optimized images, caching (with cart and checkout excluded) and good hosting keep product and category pages fast. See Core Web Vitals explained.
8. Content beyond products
Buying guides, comparisons and how-to articles attract shoppers earlier in their research and link naturally to categories and products.
Industry examples: fashion boutiques, D2C food brands and jewellers.

Quick checklist
- Keyword map for categories and products
- Intro content on every main category
- Unique product descriptions and alt text
- Product schema working
- Filter URLs controlled
- Sitemap submitted and pages indexed
