Key takeaways
  • Turn on verified-owner labels and required star ratings, and consider allowing reviews only from verified buyers.
  • Ask for reviews after delivery, not after payment, with a one-tap link by email, WhatsApp (with opt-in) or a parcel card.
  • Publish honest negative reviews, reply with a fix, and only mark up reviews that are genuinely visible on the page.

Reviews from real buyers answer the questions your product page can't: does the colour match the photos, does the size run small, did it arrive on time? For a small online store, a steady stream of honest reviews builds trust faster than almost anything else. Here's how to collect, moderate and display product reviews in WooCommerce without cutting corners.

Why product reviews matter

  • Trust for new visitors: shoppers who have never heard of your brand look for proof that others bought and were happy
  • Answers to real questions: reviews mention fit, taste, quality and packaging in the words buyers actually use
  • Fresh, unique content: product pages gain original text that competitors copying the manufacturer's description don't have
  • Feedback for you: repeated complaints point to a problem with a product, a supplier or your courier

Reviews are one part of a strong product page; see WooCommerce product page optimization for the rest.

Set up reviews properly in WooCommerce

WooCommerce has reviews built in. Under WooCommerce → Settings → Products you can:

  • Enable product reviews
  • Show a "verified owner" label on reviews from customers who actually bought the product
  • Allow reviews only from verified owners, which cuts spam and fake reviews sharply
  • Enable star ratings and make them required

Reviews are stored as a type of WordPress comment, so your discussion settings, such as holding new comments for approval, generally apply to them too. New reviews appear under Products → Reviews for moderation. If your theme hides the reviews tab or shows it badly on mobile, fix that before you start asking for reviews.

Ask at the right moment

Most happy customers never leave a review unless asked. Timing and channel make a big difference.

  • After delivery, not after payment. Nobody can review a product they haven't received. Courier delivery in India can take anything from a day to a week or more, so time the request from delivery (or from when you mark the order complete on delivery), not from checkout.
  • Allow time to use it. A skincare product or a pressure cooker needs a few days of use; a greeting card doesn't.
  • Make it one tap. Link straight to the review form for the product they bought.
  • Use channels they read. Email works for many buyers. A WhatsApp message, sent only to customers who agreed to receive messages, often gets noticed faster. A small printed card in the parcel helps too.
  • One reminder at most. Chasing repeatedly annoys customers.

WooCommerce doesn't send review requests on its own. Review plugins such as Customer Reviews for WooCommerce, and several paid review services, add automated reminder emails, photo uploads and review widgets. Compare current features and pricing, and check how each one affects page speed before committing.

Photo and video reviews

A photo from a real customer, showing the saree in daylight or the cake as it actually arrived, is often more convincing than your studio shots. Photo reviews work especially well for fashion, home decor, food and handmade products.

  • Ask for photos explicitly, and say what helps: "show it in use" or "show the fit"
  • Compress and lazy-load review images so product pages stay fast on mobile data
  • Moderate photos before they go live, checking for other people's faces, addresses on parcel labels and anything inappropriate
  • Ask permission before reusing a customer's photo in ads or on social media

Moderation: what to remove and what to keep

Moderation exists to protect shoppers, not your pride. A clear, consistent policy helps:

Remove or hold backKeep and publish
Spam, links and promotionsHonest negative reviews
Abusive or offensive languageMixed reviews with pros and cons
Personal data such as phone numbers or addressesComplaints about delivery or packaging
Reviews of a different product, or clearly not from a buyerShort reviews, even a single line

Reply to critical reviews publicly, calmly and with a fix: a replacement, a refund or an explanation. Future shoppers read your replies as closely as the review itself. See how to handle negative reviews.

Display reviews where they help

  • Show the star rating and review count near the product title and price
  • Show ratings on shop and category pages so shoppers can compare quickly
  • On products with many reviews, let shoppers sort or filter them, for example by rating or by reviews with photos
  • Keep the "verified owner" label visible so genuine reviews stand out
  • Don't bury reviews in a collapsed tab on mobile where nobody finds them

Product reviews and business reviews do different jobs. Product reviews belong on product pages; reviews of your business as a whole belong on your Google Business Profile, where they help local search. See how to get more Google reviews.

Reviews, schema and Google

WooCommerce and most SEO plugins add Product structured data to product pages, including the average rating and review count once reviews exist. This can make your products eligible for star ratings in Google results, though Google decides whether to show them.

  • Only mark up reviews that are visible on the page
  • Don't copy Google Business Profile reviews or general testimonials into product schema
  • Never add ratings through custom code or plugin settings that aren't backed by real reviews
  • Test a few product pages with Google's Rich Results Test after theme or plugin changes

Stay honest

Fake reviews are tempting when a new product has none, but they damage trust once noticed and can break consumer protection rules and platform policies. Keep it clean:

  • Never write reviews yourself, or ask staff, friends or family to review as if they were customers
  • Never buy reviews or swap them with other sellers
  • Don't delete or hide genuine negative reviews
  • If you offer anything for leaving a review, such as a coupon, offer it for any honest review rather than only positive ones, and disclose it; check current rules and platform policies first

In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards has published a standard on online consumer reviews (IS 19000:2022) that sets out good practice for collecting, moderating and publishing them, and consumer protection rules cover misleading practices. Rules change, so check the current position or ask your lawyer if you're unsure.
