Key takeaways
  • WooCommerce, Easy Digital Downloads or an LMS plugin can sell digital products; choose based on whether you sell files, courses or both.
  • Deliver files through protected links with download limits, reliable emails and proper video hosting, and accept that piracy can only be discouraged.
  • GST treatment of digital products and overseas sales can differ from physical goods, so check with your CA and publish a clear refund policy.

E-books, online courses, templates and printables can be sold again and again without packing or shipping anything. WordPress is a good home for them because you keep control of your customers, pricing and brand, instead of depending entirely on a marketplace. Here's how to choose a setup, deliver files safely and avoid the common mistakes.

What you can sell

  • E-books and guides: PDFs, workbooks and recipe books
  • Online courses: recorded video lessons, test series and cohort programmes
  • Templates: design templates, spreadsheets, résumé and business document templates
  • Printables: planners, worksheets and colouring pages
  • Creative assets: photo presets, stock photos and music
  • Software: plugins, themes or tools with licence keys

Choosing the right setup

Easy Digital DownloadsSites selling only digital files or softwareCheck which features, such as licensing, need paid add-ons
An LMS plugin such as LearnDash, Tutor LMS or LifterLMSCourses with lessons, quizzes and progress trackingVideo hosting and student support need planning

If you already run WooCommerce, adding digital products is usually the simplest path: mark a product as virtual and downloadable, and WooCommerce skips shipping. Compare current plans and features of any premium plugin before you commit.

Delivering files securely

  • Protect file links: serve downloads through your store rather than sharing a public file URL. WooCommerce, for example, has settings for how files are served, so choose one that doesn't expose the file's real location.
  • Set download limits and expiry: allow a sensible number of downloads and an expiry period, with an easy way for genuine buyers to ask for a fresh link.
  • Deliver in two places: buyers should find their downloads in their account as well as in the order email.
  • Check email deliverability: if order emails land in spam, buyers assume they've been cheated; see SPF, DKIM and DMARC explained.
  • Host large files sensibly: course videos don't belong on basic shared hosting. Use a video hosting service with privacy and domain restrictions.
  • Test on a phone: many buyers download on mobile, so offer PDFs directly where you can, and explain how to open ZIP files when you can't.

Selling courses and memberships

Courses are different from downloads: people need ongoing access, not just a file.

  • Organise lessons into modules, with progress tracking and optional quizzes
  • Decide on access: lifetime, a fixed period such as one year, or while a subscription stays active
  • Offer a free preview lesson so buyers know what they're getting
  • Plan for support: a way for students to ask questions, and clear response times
  • Keep login simple, because forgotten passwords are a common support request

Piracy: what you can and can't control

Any file a buyer can download can be shared. You can't stop piracy completely, but you can make sharing less convenient and buying more attractive.

  • Stamp PDFs with the buyer's name or email so people think twice before sharing; plugins can do this automatically
  • Keep courses behind a login rather than offering video downloads, and consider limiting simultaneous logins
  • Use licence keys for software, plugins and themes, tied to updates and support
  • Add value beyond the file: updates, community access, support or certificates that pirated copies don't include
  • Act on serious copies: platforms and hosting companies generally have a process for reporting copyright infringement

Don't let anti-piracy measures annoy paying customers. Overly strict limits can end up hurting genuine buyers more than pirates.

Payments, GST and refunds

  • Payments: UPI and cards through an Indian gateway for local buyers, and international card support if you sell overseas; see accepting online payments on WordPress.
  • GST caution: the GST treatment of digital products and online courses, and of sales to overseas buyers, can differ from physical goods, and registration rules may apply differently. Speak to your CA before you launch, not after.
  • Invoices: buyers, especially businesses, may need proper invoices, so set this up from day one.
  • Refund policy: digital products can't be returned, so state clearly when refunds are and aren't given, for example for a duplicate purchase or a faulty file. Payment gateways usually expect a visible refund policy too.

Pages that sell digital products

  • A dedicated sales page for each product: who it's for, what's inside, format, file size or course length, and what buyers get straight after paying
  • Samples: a free chapter, preview lesson or template screenshots
  • Honest reviews from real buyers
  • An FAQ covering access, devices, updates and refunds
  • A free lead magnet to build an email list you can sell to later; see lead magnets and newsletters

Authors and creators can build this into a wider personal site; see websites for authors and content creators.
