Key takeaways
  • WooCommerce needs a subscription extension for recurring billing, and prepaid plans or manual renewals are simpler ways to start.
  • In India, automatic renewals depend on RBI-compliant mandates and on your gateway's WooCommerce plugin supporting them, so confirm this before building.
  • Retention comes from a great first cycle, pause and skip options, renewal reminders and an easy, honest cancellation process.

Subscriptions turn one-time buyers into regular customers: a monthly pack of coffee, a meal plan, a membership or an annual service plan. Recurring revenue is also easier to plan around than chasing new orders every month. WooCommerce can handle subscriptions well, but in India the payment side needs extra thought. Here's how it works and what to plan for.

What you can sell on subscription

  • Repeat consumables: tea, coffee, oils, flours, pet food or skincare refills, often with subscribe-and-save pricing
  • Meal and tiffin plans: weekly or monthly plans; see websites for tiffin and meal subscriptions
  • Curated boxes: snacks, books, stationery or hobby kits
  • Memberships: clubs, communities, gyms or members-only content
  • Services: maintenance plans (AMCs), retainers or monthly coaching
  • Digital access: software licences, template libraries or course access

Do you need full subscriptions?

Automatic recurring billing is powerful, but it adds complexity. Sometimes a simpler setup does the job:

SetupBest when
Prepaid plans, such as a three-month packCustomers are happy to pay upfront, and you have no renewals to manage
Manual renewals with remindersYou have a small customer base and can send a payment link each cycle
Automatic recurring billingYou have many subscribers, predictable cycles and a gateway that supports it

Many businesses start with prepaid plans or manual renewals and move to automatic billing once demand is proven.

How subscriptions work in WooCommerce

WooCommerce doesn't include subscriptions out of the box. The official WooCommerce Subscriptions extension is the most established option, and other subscription plugins exist too, so compare features and current pricing before choosing. Typical features include:

  • Billing every week, month, quarter or year
  • Free trials and sign-up fees
  • Different plan levels or pack sizes under one product
  • Renewal orders created automatically, with emails to the customer
  • A My Account area where customers can view their subscription and, depending on your settings, pause, cancel or switch plans
  • Reports on active subscriptions, renewals and cancellations

Recurring payments in India

This is where Indian stores need care. Under RBI rules, automatic debits generally need a mandate the customer approves upfront, with a notification before each charge and extra authentication for payments above certain limits. The details change from time to time, so check the current rules with your gateway.

In practice:

  • Mandate options: gateways may support card mandates, UPI AutoPay and eNACH (bank account debits), each with its own limits and sign-up flow
  • Plugin support: a gateway offering recurring payments doesn't automatically mean its WooCommerce plugin supports automatic renewals with your subscription plugin. Confirm this specifically before you build.
  • Manual renewals as a fallback: subscription plugins can usually email the customer a renewal invoice with a link to pay each cycle when automatic billing isn't available
  • Failed payments: cards expire and mandates get cancelled, so plan retry rules and reminders by email or WhatsApp

For the basics of connecting a gateway, see accepting online payments on WordPress.

Running physical product subscriptions

  • Renewal dates: decide whether all renewals fall on the same day of the month, which makes packing and dispatch easier, or run from each customer's sign-up date
  • Stock planning: active subscriptions tell you roughly what you'll need next cycle
  • Shipping: make sure shipping charges and delivery areas apply correctly to renewal orders
  • Invoices: each renewal is a new order, so a GST invoice should be generated every time; see GST invoices in WooCommerce
  • Price changes: decide how you'll handle price increases for existing subscribers, and tell them well in advance

Daily deliveries such as milk bring their own needs, like morning slots, cut-off times and pause and resume; see websites for dairy brands and milk delivery services.

Retention: keeping subscribers longer

Getting subscribers is only half the job. Keeping them is where recurring revenue really comes from.

  • Make the first cycle great: the first delivery or first month largely decides whether people stay
  • Offer pause and skip: someone travelling for a month may pause rather than cancel
  • Send renewal reminders: a friendly note before a charge builds trust and reduces disputes
  • Let people switch plans: moving to a smaller plan is better than a cancellation
  • Ask why people cancel: a one-question survey shows you what to fix
  • Reward loyalty: small perks for long-term subscribers, such as a free add-on

Don't hide the cancel option. Making cancellation difficult frustrates customers, leads to payment disputes and damages your reputation.

Be clear in your terms and checkout

  • Show the recurring price, billing frequency and any sign-up fee on the product page and at checkout
  • State when the first and later payments will be taken
  • Explain how to pause, cancel or change a plan, and your refund rules for renewals; see returns and refunds for WooCommerce stores
  • Check current consumer protection rules for auto-renewals with your lawyer or CA
