How to Accept Online Payments on a WordPress Website in India (UPI, Cards, COD)

Whether you're selling products, taking consultation fees, collecting course payments or accepting donations, your WordPress website can take payments by UPI, cards, net banking and wallets. Here's how it works in India and how to choose the right setup.

What you need

• A payment gateway account such as Razorpay, PayU, Cashfree or PhonePe PG.
• Business KYC: typically PAN, bank account, business proof and GST details if applicable. Requirements vary by gateway and business type.
• A website with the required pages: gateways usually check for contact details, terms and conditions, privacy policy, and refund/cancellation and shipping policies before approving your account.
• HTTPS (SSL) on your website.

Ways to take payments on WordPress

1. WooCommerce (for online stores)

WooCommerce adds products, cart and checkout. Install your gateway's WooCommerce plugin, add your API keys, and customers can pay by UPI, card or net banking at checkout. You can also enable Cash on Delivery, which many Indian shoppers still prefer.

2. Payment forms (for fees, services and donations)

For consultation fees, course fees, event registrations or donations, a payment form is simpler than a full store. Form plugins can connect to gateways like Razorpay so people fill in details and pay in one step.

3. Payment links and buttons

Gateways let you create payment links or buttons you can place on any page, or send on WhatsApp. It's the quickest option for occasional payments.

Testing before you go live

• Use the gateway's test mode first and run test payments.
• Check order emails, receipts and thank-you pages.
• Test failed and cancelled payments, not just successful ones.
• Test on mobile, where most UPI payments happen.

Common problems and fixes

• Gateway application rejected: usually missing policy pages or incomplete business details on the website.
• Orders stuck as "pending": often a webhook that isn't configured. Set up the gateway's webhook URL in its dashboard.
• Slow checkout: too many plugins or slow hosting. Optimize the checkout page.
