WooCommerce Shipping Setup for India: Zones, Rates and Couriers
How to set up WooCommerce shipping for Indian stores: shipping zones, flat and weight-based rates, free shipping thresholds, COD, courier aggregators, tracking and delivery expectations.

On this page
- Set shipping zones by city, state and rest of India, and choose flat or weight-based rates.
- Manage COD risk with limits, clear fees or confirmation.
- Use couriers or aggregators with tracking, and publish a transparent shipping policy.
Shipping is where many Indian online stores lose money or customers: either charging too little and absorbing costs, or charging too much and losing sales. Here's how to set up WooCommerce shipping sensibly.
1. Plan your shipping zones
WooCommerce shipping zones let you set different rates by region, for example:
- Your city (local delivery or pickup)
- Your state
- Rest of India
- Specific remote regions, if courier costs differ
- International (if you ship abroad)
2. Choose a rate method
- Flat rate: simple and predictable for similar-sized products
- Weight-based: better for products that vary widely in weight (oils, flours, heavy items)
- Free shipping above a threshold: encourages larger orders; set the threshold so margins still work
- Local pickup for nearby customers
Always set accurate product weights and dimensions so calculations are correct.
3. Cash on Delivery
COD is still popular in India but carries return-to-origin risk. Options include limiting COD to certain zones or order values, adding a COD fee (shown clearly), or confirming COD orders by phone or WhatsApp.
More on reducing refused deliveries: cash on delivery without losing money.
4. Couriers and aggregators
Shipping aggregators integrate with WooCommerce to compare courier rates, generate labels, schedule pickups and push tracking. Direct courier accounts can suit higher volumes. Compare pricing, coverage, COD remittance timelines and support before choosing.
5. Tracking and notifications
- Add tracking numbers to orders and send them automatically
- Send shipped and delivered updates by email and, with consent, WhatsApp
- Show estimated delivery times on product and checkout pages
A pin code delivery checker on product pages lets shoppers see delivery dates and COD availability before they reach checkout.
6. Packaging
Choose packaging that protects products and suits courier volumetric weight rules. Oversized boxes increase costs.
7. Be transparent
- Publish a clear shipping policy: zones, charges, timelines and COD rules
- Show shipping costs before checkout to reduce abandoned carts. See abandoned cart recovery.
Test before launch
Place test orders for different zones, weights and payment methods, and confirm the charges are right. It's part of the WooCommerce launch checklist. Need it set up for you? See WooCommerce development.
