How to Write Product Descriptions That Sell (and Rank)
A simple formula for writing online store product descriptions that convert and rank: benefits first, scannable details, answering objections, unique copy and SEO-friendly titles.

On this page
- Use descriptive titles and lead with the main benefit.
- Make details scannable and answer common objections.
- Write unique copy in customers' language, supported by photos and reviews.
Product descriptions do the job of a salesperson in an online store. Copying the manufacturer's text or writing one vague line wastes that opportunity. Here's a simple formula that works for most products.
1. Write a clear, descriptive title
Include what it is plus key attributes: "Cold-pressed groundnut oil, 1 litre, glass bottle" beats "Premium Oil". Titles are also what shoppers search for.
2. Lead with the main benefit
Start with one or two sentences on why someone would want it: what problem it solves or what experience it gives. Then move to details.
3. Make details scannable
- Size, weight, dimensions
- Materials or ingredients
- How to use and care instructions
- What's in the box
Bullet points or a small table work best.
4. Answer objections
Think about what makes shoppers hesitate: sizing, quality, delivery time, returns, compatibility. Answer those in the description or a short FAQ.
5. Use your customers' language
Use the words customers use in reviews, questions and searches, not internal jargon.
6. Keep it unique
Manufacturer descriptions appear on every competitor's site. Unique descriptions help you stand out in search and in shoppers' minds; see duplicate content explained.
7. Support with visuals and proof
Great photos, a short video and genuine reviews do much of the persuading; see product page optimization.
A quick template

- Who it's for and how it's used
