  • Pages and URL Inspection reveal indexing problems; sitemaps help discovery.
  • Check Core Web Vitals, HTTPS, security and manual actions monthly.

Google Search Console is free and shows how Google sees your website. It looks technical at first, but a few reports tell you almost everything a business owner needs to know. If you haven't set it up yet, see setting up GA4 and Search Console.

Performance

The most useful report. It shows:

  • Queries: what people searched when your site appeared
  • Pages: which pages got impressions and clicks
  • Clicks and impressions: how often you were shown and clicked
  • Average position: roughly where you ranked
  • CTR: clicks divided by impressions

Use it to: find queries with many impressions but few clicks (improve titles and descriptions) and pages ranking around positions 8–20 (improve content and internal links).

Pages (indexing)

Shows which pages are indexed and why others aren't: "crawled, currently not indexed", "duplicate without canonical", "excluded by noindex" and more. Not every excluded page is a problem, but important pages should be indexed.

For what each status means and which ones need fixing, see Search Console page indexing errors explained.

Sitemaps

Submit your XML sitemap and check it was read successfully.

URL Inspection

Check a specific page: is it indexed, when was it last crawled, is it mobile-friendly? You can also request indexing for new or updated important pages.

Core Web Vitals

Real-user speed and stability data, grouped into good, needs improvement and poor URLs. See Core Web Vitals explained.

HTTPS

Confirms pages are served securely. Fix any pages listed as not HTTPS.

Security issues and manual actions

If these ever show problems, act immediately: they mean Google detected hacking or a guideline violation. See signs your site is hacked.

Shows which sites link to you and your most-linked pages, plus internal linking. Useful for spotting important pages with few internal links.

Monthly routine (15 minutes)

  1. Performance: compare clicks and impressions with last month
  2. Find two pages in positions 8–20 to improve
  3. Pages: check that important pages are indexed
  4. Core Web Vitals and HTTPS: any new issues?
  5. Security and manual actions: should be empty

If traffic drops suddenly, work through the traffic drop checklist.
