Key takeaways
  • Google must discover, crawl and choose to index a page before it can rank.
  • Submit your sitemap in Search Console, request indexing for key pages and link pages together.
  • Check for leftover noindex tags, robots.txt blocks and wrong canonicals.

You've launched a new website, but searching for it on Google shows nothing. Don't panic. Google needs to discover, crawl and index your pages first. Here's how that works and what you can do to speed it up.

How Google indexing works

  1. Discovery: Google finds your URLs through links, sitemaps or Search Console.
  2. Crawling: Googlebot visits the pages and reads the content.
  3. Indexing: Google decides whether to store the page in its index.
  4. Ranking: indexed pages can then appear for relevant searches.

Indexing isn't guaranteed. Google chooses which pages to index based on quality and usefulness.

Check whether you're indexed

  • Search site:yourdomain.com on Google for a rough view
  • Use the URL Inspection tool in Google Search Console for an exact status

Steps to get indexed faster

1. Set up Google Search Console

Verify your domain and submit your XML sitemap. See how to set up Search Console.

2. Request indexing for key pages

Use URL Inspection → "Request indexing" for your homepage and most important pages. Don't spam requests for every page; sitemaps handle the rest.

3. Link your pages together

Google discovers pages by following links. Make sure every important page is linked from your navigation, homepage or related pages. Orphan pages with no internal links are often ignored.

4. Get a few links from other sites

Links from your Google Business Profile, social profiles, directories and partner or client websites help Google discover and trust your site.

5. Publish genuinely useful content

Thin or duplicate pages are often crawled but not indexed. Pages that answer questions thoroughly are indexed more readily.

6. Make sure the site is fast and mobile-friendly

Google crawls with a mobile browser. Slow, broken or hard-to-render pages can delay indexing.

Common blockers

  • WordPress "Discourage search engines from indexing this site" left on after launch
  • noindex tags left over from a staging site
  • robots.txt blocking important folders
  • Canonical tags pointing to the wrong URL or domain
  • Duplicate versions of the site (http/https, www/non-www) without redirects

How long does it take?

Some pages are indexed within days; others take weeks, especially on brand-new domains with few links. Keep publishing useful content, building internal links and earning mentions, and indexing speeds up over time.

If pages stay unindexed, a technical WordPress SEO review usually finds the cause quickly.
