How to Redesign Your Website Without Losing Google Rankings

A redesign should bring more enquiries, not fewer. But it's common for businesses to launch a beautiful new website and then watch their Google traffic drop. That almost always happens because a few SEO steps were skipped. Here's how to avoid it.

Why redesigns lose rankings

  • Page URLs change and old links lead to 404 errors
  • Pages that ranked well are removed or merged without redirects
  • Titles, descriptions and headings are lost or rewritten carelessly
  • Valuable content is cut to make the design "cleaner"
  • The staging site accidentally stays blocked from search engines
  • The new site is slower than the old one

Before the redesign

1. Record what's working now

Export your top pages from Google Search Console and Google Analytics: which pages get the most search clicks and which keywords they rank for. These pages need the most care.

2. Crawl the old site

Make a full list of existing URLs (a crawler tool or your sitemap works). You'll use it to plan redirects.

3. Keep URLs where possible

The safest URL is the one that doesn't change. Keep the same slugs for important pages whenever you can.

4. Map every changed URL

Create a simple spreadsheet: old URL, then new URL. Every old page should point to its closest new equivalent, not just the homepage.

During the build

  • Build on a staging site and block it from search engines while you work.
  • Carry over SEO settings: titles, meta descriptions, headings and image alt text for key pages.
  • Keep (and improve) content on pages that rank. Don't cut paragraphs just to make the page look minimal.
  • Keep structured data (schema markup) and internal links.
  • Test speed, because the new site should be at least as fast as the old one.

At launch

  1. Set up 301 redirects for every changed URL from your map.
  2. Remove the "discourage search engines" setting in WordPress (Settings → Reading) and any noindex tags from staging.
  3. Check that HTTPS works on every page and that there's one preferred version of your domain.
  4. Submit the new XML sitemap in Google Search Console.
  5. Test forms, WhatsApp buttons and phone links.

After launch

  • Monitor Search Console daily for the first two weeks for 404 errors and indexing issues.
  • Fix any missing redirects quickly.
  • Compare traffic and rankings for your top pages with your "before" snapshot.
  • Expect small fluctuations for a few weeks as Google re-crawls the site. That's normal if the steps above are done.

The bottom line

A redesign done with SEO in mind usually improves rankings, because the new site is faster, clearer and better structured. The key is planning redirects and protecting the pages that already bring you traffic.
