Key takeaways
  • Judge Pune developers on live work, communication and process first; being local is a useful bonus, not the deciding factor.
  • A fair proposal lists pages, features, revisions, content responsibility, milestones, exclusions, GST and the support period, so compare scope rather than totals.
  • Make sure the domain, hosting, admin login, licences and Google accounts are in your name, and agree who maintains the site before launch.

Whether you run a clinic in Kothrud, a manufacturing unit in Chakan or a startup in Baner, you'll find plenty of people in Pune offering to build your website: freelancers, small studios and larger agencies. Choice is good, but it makes them hard to tell apart. Here's a practical way to choose. One disclosure: I'm a WordPress developer based in Pune myself, so use this checklist on everyone you speak to, including me.

Know what you need before you shortlist

Developers can only give you a useful answer if you give them a clear question. Before you call anyone, write down:

  • The pages you need and the main action you want visitors to take (call, WhatsApp, enquiry form, booking, purchase)
  • Features such as an online store, payments, bookings or Marathi and Hindi versions
  • Who will write the text and supply the photos
  • Your rough budget range and any deadline, such as a launch before a festival season or an exhibition

The website brief template turns this into one page you can send to everyone. It also helps you decide between a freelancer, a small studio and an agency; see freelancer vs agency for the trade-offs.

Local or remote: what actually matters

Being in the same city has real advantages:

  • You can meet face to face for the planning meeting, which some owners and teams prefer
  • A local developer is more likely to know Pune's areas and how customers search, such as "dentist in Wakad" or "CA near Hadapsar"
  • Visiting your shop, factory or clinic is easy if it helps them understand the business

But location matters less than people think. Even with a local developer, most of the work happens over WhatsApp, calls and screen-sharing. A responsive developer elsewhere in India is better than an unresponsive one down the road. Judge them on communication, process and the quality of their live work first, and treat being local as a bonus.

Check portfolios and live sites properly

Screenshots and mock-ups prove very little. Ask for links to live websites and check them yourself:

  1. Open them on your phone using mobile data, not office Wi-Fi. Do they load quickly and read easily?
  2. Try the buttons a customer would use: call, WhatsApp and directions links. Don't submit forms on other businesses' sites, but check they're easy to find.
  3. Ask what they did on each site: design, development, content, or only small changes.
  4. Look for work similar to yours, such as clinics, manufacturers, restaurants or online stores.
  5. Check the sites are still live and looked after. Broken pages or an expired SSL certificate say something about aftercare.
  6. Ask to speak to one or two past clients, and read the developer's own Google reviews.

Questions to ask in the first conversation

  • Who will actually build my website? Some agencies pass work on to subcontractors. That isn't always bad, but you should know.
  • Which theme or page builder will you use, and why for my site?
  • Will I be able to edit text and photos myself, and will you show me how?
  • How do you make sites fast on mobile networks?
  • What do you need from me, and by when? What happens to the timeline if my content is late?
  • What isn't included? Content writing, photography, premium plugin licences and hosting are common extras.
  • What SEO basics are included? Page titles, Search Console, and linking the site to your Google Business Profile.

A good developer will also ask you plenty of questions. If they quote without understanding your business, be careful.

What a fair proposal includes

Quotes in Pune, as anywhere, vary widely because people quote for different things. Compare the scope, not just the total. A fair proposal spells out:

  • The list of pages and features, and the design approach
  • How many rounds of revisions are included
  • Who supplies content and images
  • A timeline with milestones, and payments linked to those milestones rather than everything upfront
  • What's excluded, and what extras would cost
  • Whether GST is included, if the developer is registered
  • The support period after launch, and maintenance options

For a side-by-side method, see how to compare website quotes.

Ownership of domain, hosting and logins

This is where many business owners get caught out years later. Before you pay, agree that:

  • The domain is registered in your business's name, with your email address on the account
  • The hosting account belongs to you, with the developer added as a user if needed
  • You get an administrator login to WordPress, not just an editor account
  • Premium theme and plugin licences are bought in your name, or the proposal says clearly who holds them
  • You are the owner of Google Analytics, Search Console and your Google Business Profile

The website ownership checklist covers everything you should hold.

Plan for maintenance after launch

A website needs updates, backups and the occasional fix long after launch day. Ask before you sign:

  • How long free fixes last after launch, and what counts as a fix rather than a new change
  • Whether they offer a monthly maintenance plan, and what it covers
  • How quickly they respond if the site goes down
  • What you'll receive at handover: logins, a short guide and backups

If they don't offer maintenance, that's fine, as long as you know who will handle it before the site goes live.
