A "nulled" theme or plugin is a premium product with its licence check removed, shared for free on unofficial websites. It's tempting to save on licence fees, but nulled software is one of the most common sources of malware I find on hacked business websites.

What can be hidden inside

• Backdoors giving the distributor access to your site
• Hidden spam links or code that creates spam pages; see SEO spam hacks
• Redirects sending your visitors to other sites
• Code that creates admin users or sends your data elsewhere
• Crypto-mining or ad-injection scripts that slow your site

The malicious code may stay dormant for weeks before activating, so the site can seem fine at first.

Other problems

• No updates: security fixes never arrive, leaving known vulnerabilities open
• No support from the developer when something breaks
• Legal risk: using pirated software violates the developer's licence terms
• SEO damage: hidden spam links can hurt rankings and trigger Google warnings

How to check your site

• List every premium theme and plugin and confirm you have a valid licence, ideally in your business's name
• Check that updates are available through the official channel
• Ask your developer where each premium product came from
• Run a malware scan; see malware scanners compared

How to replace them safely

1. Back up the site
2. Buy a genuine licence, or choose a free alternative from WordPress.org
3. Delete the nulled copy completely, not just deactivate it
4. Install a fresh copy from the official source
5. Scan the whole site and check for backdoors left behind; see finding backdoors
