WordPress vs Squarespace: Which Is Better for Your Business Website?

Squarespace is known for polished templates and an all-in-one setup where hosting, design and security come in one subscription. WordPress is known for flexibility and ownership. Both can produce a professional business website. The real question is which one suits your business over the next five years, not just the next five days, especially if you're running it from India.

Ownership: who really controls your website
With Squarespace, your text, images and domain belong to you, but the website itself only exists on Squarespace. If you leave, the design and most features stay behind. Squarespace offers a limited export, mainly pages and blog posts in a WordPress-compatible format, so moving away usually means rebuilding.
WordPress is open-source. Your site is a set of files and a database you can copy to any host, and any WordPress developer can work on it. If a hosting company or developer disappoints you, you take everything and go.

Flexibility and features
Squarespace's strength is that everything is designed to work together. Galleries, forms, a blog and simple selling are built in, and there are no plugins to update or conflict. For a site that needs exactly what the platform offers, that simplicity is valuable.
The limits show when your business needs something specific:
- Booking rules that match how your clinic or salon actually runs
- Hindi or regional-language versions of your pages
- Enquiry forms that feed a CRM or Google Sheet
- Custom tools such as quote calculators, dealer portals or product catalogues with filters
- Directories, memberships or course platforms
On WordPress, these are usually a plugin or a small piece of custom development away. On Squarespace, you're limited to what the platform and its extensions support.
Cost over time
Squarespace's subscription covers hosting, SSL, templates, security and support. You keep paying for as long as the site exists, and commerce features generally sit on higher plans. Check current plans, what each includes, and how you'll be billed and taxed from India.
WordPress software is free. You pay for hosting and a domain, sometimes premium theme or plugin licences, and usually a developer to build and maintain it. That often means a higher cost upfront, but you choose every ongoing expense and can change suppliers at any time.

Indian payments and selling online
This is where the difference is sharpest for Indian businesses. Squarespace's checkout works with a small set of payment processors, and popular Indian gateways, UPI and cash on delivery are generally not among its built-in options. SEO and speed
Both platforms handle the basics: editable page titles and meta descriptions, clean URLs, automatic sitemaps, SSL and redirects. A Squarespace site can rank well for a local business.
The difference is control. On Squarespace, you work within the settings the platform exposes, and you can't choose your hosting or fine-tune performance. On WordPress, SEO plugins, schema markup, caching and image optimisation give you full control, but also full responsibility. A poorly built WordPress site with heavy plugins can easily be slower than a Squarespace one.
In practice, rankings depend far more on your content, service pages, Google Business Profile and reviews than on the platform.
Which should you choose?
Squarespace fits if...
- You're a photographer, designer, artist or small café that wants a polished look quickly
- You'll build and edit the site yourself and don't want to think about updates
- You don't need Indian payment gateways, bookings with custom rules or integrations
- You're comfortable paying a subscription for as long as the site runs
WordPress fits if...
- Your website is a main source of leads or sales, for a clinic, manufacturer, consultant or service business
- You want to take payments through Indian gateways and UPI, or run a proper online store
- You publish content regularly or plan to grow with new pages and features
- You want full ownership and the freedom to hire any developer

It's common for a business to start on Squarespace and outgrow it. The move is manageable: the design and pages are rebuilt on WordPress, content is brought across, every old URL is mapped and redirected with 301 redirects, and the domain is pointed to the new hosting. Done carefully, you keep the Google rankings you've already earned.
