.in vs .com (and .co.in): Which Domain Should an Indian Business Choose?
.in, .com or .co.in for an Indian business? How your audience, name availability, trust, typing habits and Google country targeting should shape the choice.

On this page
- Choose .in if your customers are mainly in India and .com if you sell abroad or plan to go global; prefer .in over .co.in for a new business.
- Google treats .in as a signal of relevance to India, while a .com relies on content, addresses, links and your Business Profile; neither guarantees rankings.
- Where possible, register both .in and .com in your own account, use one as the main domain and 301-redirect the other.
You've settled on a business name, and now the registrar is offering .com, .in, .co.in and a dozen newer extensions. Which one should you pick? For most Indian businesses there's no single wrong answer, but the right choice depends on who your customers are and what's actually available. This guide focuses on the extension; for choosing the name itself, see how to choose a domain name for your business.
The short answer
- Customers mainly in India: .in is a strong, natural choice, and .com works just as well if you can get it
- Customers abroad, or plans to go global: .com, because it carries no country signal
- New business choosing today: prefer .in over .co.in; it's shorter and more familiar
- If both are available: register .in and .com, use one as your main address and redirect the other
Start with your audience
Think about where your customers are and what they expect.
- Local and national businesses: clinics, coaching institutes, contractors, shops and service companies serving Indian customers. A .in address clearly says "Indian business", which is usually a plus.
- Exporters and international B2B: overseas buyers are most familiar with .com. A .in address isn't a problem in itself, but it signals a focus on India, which isn't always the message you want.
- SaaS, IT services and startups with global ambitions: .com is the safer long-term choice, even if your first customers are in India.
Availability and cost
Short, memorable .com names are hard to find because so many are already registered. The same name is often still free as a .in. Before choosing, check what's on the .com version of your name:
- Parked or unused: manageable, but some customers will land there by mistake
- For sale: only worth buying if the price makes sense for your business
- An active business in your field: risky, because customers and emails will go to them, and there may be trademark issues
Don't twist your name into a hyphenated or misspelt .com just to get the extension. A clean .in beats an awkward .com. And whichever you choose, check the renewal price, not just the first-year offer.
Trust, familiarity and typing habits
.com is the default most people type without thinking. Indian customers are also used to seeing .in addresses, so either looks professional.
The practical risk is habit. If your address is yourbrand.in, some people will type yourbrand.com, especially when writing your email address. If someone else owns that .com, those visitors and emails go to them. Owning both extensions solves this.
What about .co.in and other options?
- .co.in was common before plain .in registrations became popular. It's longer, and people easily shorten it to .co or .in by mistake. If you've used one for years it's fine to keep; for a new business, .in is simpler.
- .org.in suits non-profits and trusts; .gov.in and academic extensions like .ac.in are restricted to eligible government and educational institutions.
- Newer extensions such as .shop or .tech can work for strong brands but are less familiar to many customers.
SEO: does the extension affect rankings?
A little, in a specific way. Google treats .in as a country-code domain, so it takes it as a signal that the site is especially relevant to users in India. That helps Google understand your audience; it doesn't make you rank higher on its own.
A .com is generic and has no country attached. Google works out who it's for from other signals: your content and language, addresses and phone numbers, links from Indian websites, your Google Business Profile and, for multi-country sites, hreflang tags. Google has also retired the old country-targeting setting in Search Console, so you can't simply set a country for a .com there any more.
- A .com site can rank perfectly well in India
- A .in site can rank abroad, but the country signal works against it for international audiences
- For local searches like "CA in Jaipur", your Google Business Profile, reviews and location pages matter far more than the extension; see the local SEO guide for Indian businesses
- Keywords in the domain carry little weight, so choose for your brand, not for search
Buying both, and setting it up properly
- Register both in your own account, not your developer's, and turn on auto-renew
- Pick one primary domain for your website, business email, visiting cards and Google Business Profile
- Redirect the other with a permanent 301 redirect to the same page on your main domain
- Don't run two copies of the same website on both extensions; that creates duplicate content
- Consider email forwarding on the second domain, so messages sent to the wrong extension still reach you
Every extra domain is one more renewal to track; keep them on the renewal checklist.
Switching extensions later
If you start on .co.in or .in and later move to a .com, it's very doable. Every old URL is 301-redirected to its new address, Search Console's Change of Address tool tells Google about the move, and your email, Google Business Profile, social profiles and printed material are updated. Expect some temporary ranking movement while Google processes the change. Keep the old domain renewed permanently so the redirects keep working.
