Key takeaways
  • Base the menu on visitors' top tasks, with 5–7 clear items and a CTA.
  • Keep important pages within two or three clicks of the homepage.
  • Make mobile menus easy, use the footer well and support with breadcrumbs and internal links.

Navigation is how visitors find their way around your site, and how search engines understand which pages matter. A clear structure helps both.

Start with what visitors want

List the top reasons people visit: see services, check prices, view work, learn about you, contact you. Your main menu should serve those tasks directly.

Keep the main menu short

  • Around 5–7 top-level items
  • Clear, familiar labels: "Services", "Work", "About", "Blog", "Contact", not clever or vague ones
  • A prominent call-to-action button ("Get a Quote")

Organise a simple hierarchy

  • Home → Services → individual service pages
  • Home → Industries → industry pages (if relevant)
  • Home → Blog → articles grouped by topic

Important pages should be reachable within two or three clicks from the homepage.

Use dropdowns for groups like services, but keep them scannable. Very large menus overwhelm visitors, especially on mobile.

Mobile navigation

  • A clear menu button and easy-to-tap links
  • Call and WhatsApp buttons visible without opening the menu
  • Test on real phones

Footers are great for secondary links: all services, industries, resources, contact details and policies.

Supporting SEO

Pages that no menu or other page links to become orphans; see how to find and fix orphan pages.

Test it

Ask someone unfamiliar with your business to find a specific service and your contact details. Watch where they hesitate, then simplify.
