Key takeaways
  • City-swapped, near-identical pages are doorway pages that Google treats as spam.
  • Create location pages only where you have a branch or real local work to show.
  • Useful location pages have local details, proof and unique content.

Businesses serving several cities often want a page for each location, such as "plumber in Noida" and "plumber in Gurgaon". Done well, location pages help customers and rank locally. Done badly, they're "doorway pages": near-identical pages with the city name swapped, which Google treats as spam.

What doorway pages look like

  • Dozens of pages with the same text and only the city name changed
  • Pages for places you don't actually serve
  • Pages that exist only to rank and funnel visitors elsewhere

These can hurt your whole site's standing in search.

When a location page makes sense

  • You have a physical branch or office there
  • You genuinely serve the area and have real local experience: projects, clients, reviews
  • You have something specific to say about that location

If your business has several branches or clinics, see how to structure a multi-location business website, including Business Profiles and schema for each branch.

What makes a location page genuinely useful

  1. Local details: branch address, map, hours, local phone and team
  2. Local proof: projects completed in that area, photos, testimonials from local clients
  3. Local specifics: areas covered, typical travel times, local regulations or conditions relevant to your service
  4. Unique content: written for that location, not a template with the name swapped
  5. Clear call to action with local contact options

Alternatives if you don't have local specifics

  • One strong service page that lists the areas you serve
  • A Google Business Profile with service areas set
  • Location-focused articles only where you have real insight (for example "Solar subsidy process in Rajasthan")

Supporting local rankings

Location pages work best alongside a complete Google Business Profile, consistent contact details and genuine reviews. See the local SEO guide and Google Business Profile checklist.

The rule of thumb

If a location page would still be useful to a customer in that city even if search engines didn't exist, it's probably fine. If it only exists to catch searches, don't build it. Unsure? A WordPress SEO review can help plan location pages safely.
