Elementor vs Gutenberg: Which WordPress Builder Should You Use?

If you're building or redesigning a WordPress site, you'll probably choose between two ways of creating pages: Elementor, the popular drag-and-drop page builder, or Gutenberg, WordPress's built-in block editor. Both are good. The right choice depends on your priorities.

Choose Elementor if...

• You want to edit layouts visually without touching code
• You need custom, design-heavy pages, landing pages and popups
• Your team isn't technical and wants to make changes confidently
• You want features like forms, popups and theme templates in one tool (Elementor Pro)

Choose Gutenberg if...

• Maximum speed and a lightweight site are top priorities
• Your site is content-focused: blogs, news, documentation
• You want to avoid yearly plugin licence costs
• You want content that isn't tied to a third-party builder

What about speed?

Gutenberg sites are usually lighter out of the box. But a well-built Elementor site on good hosting, with a lightweight theme like Hello Elementor, caching and optimized images, can still be very fast. Most slow Elementor sites are slow because of how they were built, not because of Elementor itself.

My recommendation

For most small business websites where owners want to update pages themselves, Elementor offers the best balance of design freedom and ease of use, as long as it's built carefully. For content-heavy sites and blogs where speed is critical, Gutenberg is an excellent, lightweight choice. You can also combine them: Gutenberg for blog posts, and Elementor for key marketing pages.
