Key takeaways
  • Web page menus beat PDFs for mobile, search, updates and accessibility.
  • Include prices, descriptions, veg markers, spice levels and allergens.
  • Point QR codes to the page, link ordering and keep Google Business Profile in sync.

The menu is the most visited page on almost every restaurant website. Yet many restaurants upload a scanned PDF or a photo that's hard to read on a phone. A proper menu page brings more customers and is easier to keep updated.

Why a web page beats a PDF

  • Mobile-friendly: no pinching and zooming or waiting for a large file to download
  • Searchable: Google can read dish names, helping you appear for searches like "best biryani near me"
  • Easy to update: change a price in seconds
  • Accessible: screen readers can read it
  • Linkable: share links to specific sections

You can still offer a PDF for printing, but make the web page the main menu.

What to include

  • Categories: starters, mains, breads, desserts, drinks
  • Dish names with short, appetising descriptions
  • Prices, kept up to date
  • Veg and non-veg markers customers expect
  • Spice levels and allergen information
  • Photos of signature dishes (not every item)
  • Notes on taxes and service charges, if applicable

Cafes have a few menu details of their own, such as milk options, seasonal drinks and eggless bakes; see websites for cafes and coffee shops.

Make it easy to scan

  • Sticky category navigation on mobile
  • Clear typography and spacing
  • Highlight bestsellers and chef's specials

QR code menus

Link table QR codes to your menu web page, not a PDF. It loads faster and you can update it without reprinting codes. Add UTM tags to measure scans; see UTM tags explained.

Connect to ordering

Add "Order online" buttons linking to your direct ordering system or delivery partners; see online ordering for restaurants.

Google Business Profile menu

Add your menu (or a link to it) to your Google Business Profile, and keep it consistent with your website; see Google Business Profile checklist.

Restaurant schema can include a link to your menu, helping search engines connect your menu page with your restaurant; see schema markup explained.

Keep it current

An outdated price or a dish you no longer serve causes awkward moments at the table. Update the menu whenever the physical menu changes.
