Key takeaways
  • A Meta catalogue powers catalogue ads and, where available, Instagram and Facebook shopping features; check what Meta currently offers in India.
  • Use one connection method, and make sure catalogue IDs match the content IDs your Pixel and Conversions API send.
  • Check syncing after bulk changes and sales, mark out-of-stock items correctly, and review Commerce Manager diagnostics weekly.

If you run a WooCommerce store and advertise on Instagram or Facebook, Meta will soon ask for a catalogue: a list of your products with prices, images, links and stock status. Once connected, it can power ads that show shoppers the products they looked at, and shopping features where available. Here's how the connection works, the main ways to set it up and how to keep it accurate. Meta changes its commerce features and requirements often, so check its current help pages before you start.

What a Meta catalogue is used for

Your catalogue lives in Commerce Manager, inside your Meta business portfolio (previously called Business Manager). It can be used for:

  • Catalogue ads (currently called Advantage+ catalog ads): Meta automatically shows products to people who viewed them on your site, or to new people likely to be interested
  • Carousel and collection ads built from your products, without designing each one by hand
  • Shopping features such as a shop on your Facebook Page or Instagram profile and product tags in posts and reels, where your account is eligible

Shopping features have changed several times and vary by country. Checkout inside Meta's apps has generally been limited to a few markets, so for most Indian stores shoppers tap through to your WooCommerce site to buy. Check what Commerce Manager currently offers your account before planning around a feature.

How it differs from Google Merchant Center

QuestionGoogle Merchant CenterMeta catalogue
Where products appearGoogle Search, the Shopping tab, Images and Google adsInstagram and Facebook feeds, Stories, Reels and shops
Shopper mindsetActively searching for a productScrolling, discovering and being reminded
Free exposureFree product listingsMostly through ads; organic shopping features vary
What matching depends onIdentifiers such as GTIN, brand and MPNProduct IDs that match your Pixel events

The underlying product data is much the same, and one well-kept WooCommerce store can feed both. If you haven't set up Google yet, see Google Merchant Center for WooCommerce.

Get the groundwork ready

  • Own the accounts: create the business portfolio in your company's name with your own admin access, and add your agency or developer as a partner, not the other way round
  • Connect your Facebook Page and Instagram professional account to the business portfolio
  • Verify your domain in the business settings
  • Set up the Meta Pixel and Conversions API, because catalogue ads depend on product events; see Meta Pixel and Conversions API explained
  • Publish clear store policies: contact details, shipping, returns and privacy
  • Tidy your product data: every product needs a SKU, a good main image, a real description, the correct price and stock status, and a brand

Ways to connect WooCommerce

ApproachHow it worksWatch out for
Meta's official WooCommerce extension (long listed as Facebook for WooCommerce)Connects your store to your business portfolio, syncs products as you save them, and can set up the Pixel and Conversions APISync errors after bulk changes, and conflicts with other Pixel plugins
Feed plugin with a scheduled feedA plugin builds a product feed file at a URL, and Commerce Manager fetches it on a schedule you setChanges only appear after the next fetch
Manual spreadsheet uploadYou upload a file in Commerce ManagerGoes out of date quickly; only for small or test catalogues
Custom integration via Meta's APIA developer sends updates as soon as prices or stock changeDevelopment and maintenance cost; mainly worth it for large catalogues or stock managed in an ERP

Most small and medium stores start with the official extension or a feed plugin that also produces their Google feed; check current features before choosing. Use one method per catalogue, as two methods updating the same products cause duplicates or overwritten values.

Getting the product data right

  • Required fields: Meta's specification currently includes an ID, title, description, availability, condition, price, link, image link and brand; confirm the current list in Meta's help pages
  • Consistent IDs: the ID in the catalogue must match the content ID your Pixel and Conversions API send with ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase events. If one uses the SKU and the other the WooCommerce product ID, catalogue ads can't connect shoppers to products
  • Variations: each size or colour is usually a separate item, linked by a shared item group ID; see WooCommerce product variations
  • Prices: in rupees with the currency code, matching what the product page shows, with a separate sale price field for offers
  • Titles: brand, product type and key attributes, without capitals or "50% OFF" in the title itself
  • Images: clear photos of the product, without text overlays or watermarks; square images display well across Meta's placements

Policies and product approvals

Products in your catalogue are checked against Meta's Commerce Policies for shopping features and its advertising standards for ads. Some categories are restricted or prohibited, such as tobacco, weapons, adult products and prescription medicines, and there are rules on health claims and before-and-after images. Read the current policies before listing anything in a sensitive category.

Rejected items appear in Commerce Manager with a reason. Fix the product data or listing and request a review where that option is offered. Repeated violations can lead to restrictions on your shop or ad account, so keep listings honest: accurate descriptions, real photos and prices that match your site.

Keeping prices and stock in sync

Ads showing old prices or sold-out products waste money and annoy shoppers. To stay accurate:

  • Know what triggers a sync: the official extension usually updates products when they are saved in WordPress. Bulk imports, stock updates from inventory software or direct database edits may not trigger it, so check a few products after big changes
  • Match feed schedules to reality: if prices change daily, a weekly fetch isn't enough. Before and after a festival sale, trigger a manual update
  • Mark stock correctly: out-of-stock items should show as out of stock so catalogue ads stop promoting them, and drafts or deleted products should leave the catalogue
  • Review diagnostics weekly: Commerce Manager flags mismatches, missing fields and rejected items
  • Test after updates: plugin or WooCommerce updates can break syncing, so compare a few products in Commerce Manager with your live site

Accurate stock in WooCommerce is the foundation of all this; see WooCommerce inventory management. Each month, compare the purchases Meta reports with your actual WooCommerce orders, so you know whether the catalogue is paying for itself.
