Key takeaways
  • Send Instagram visitors to a page that matches the post, not your homepage, with WhatsApp and a short form near the top.
  • Use your bio link, Story link stickers, Highlights and pinned posts as signposts to specific pages.
  • Tag every link with UTM parameters and track which posts lead to enquiries and customers, not just likes.

Plenty of Indian businesses have a busy Instagram account and a quiet website. Followers like the posts, a few send "price?" in the DMs, and most never visit the site or become customers. The problem usually isn't the content itself but the path from a post to an enquiry. Here's how to build that path, and how to tell whether it's working.

Why likes don't turn into enquiries

Instagram is designed to keep people on Instagram. Links in post captions aren't clickable, people scroll quickly, and someone who is interested today may forget you by tomorrow. So you need to:

  • Make the next step obvious in every post and story
  • Send people to a page that continues the conversation the post started
  • Make enquiring easy on a phone, in a few taps
  • Track what happens, so you know which posts actually bring business

The bio link is the main clickable route from your profile to your website. Instagram lets you add more than one link, but most people tap the first, so choose carefully. You have three main options:

OptionGood forWatch out for
A third-party link-in-bio toolQuick set-up, easy to changeVisitors land on someone else's page first; tracking and branding can be limited on free plans
A "links" page on your own websiteYour branding, full analytics, a chance to show reviews and a WhatsApp buttonIt must load fast and be kept up to date
Linking straight to one landing pageA single offer or seasonal campaignRemember to change it when the campaign ends

A simple page on your own site with four to six large buttons (current offer, services or products, prices, reviews, WhatsApp) works well for most businesses. Rewrite the bio text too: say what you do, where, and what to tap, for example "Modular kitchens in Pune. Tap below for designs and a free site visit."

Send people to a page that matches the post

If a reel shows a bridal make-up look and the link opens your homepage, the visitor has to go hunting, and most won't. Send them to a page about exactly that service or product. For offers and campaigns, a dedicated landing page usually does better than a general page; see landing page vs website.

Instagram visitors arrive on a phone, often inside Instagram's own in-app browser, so the page should:

  • Load quickly and show the same look, product or offer they just saw
  • Put the main action (WhatsApp, call or a short form) near the top
  • Give price guidance or a starting range if you can; see should you show prices on your website
  • Include real photos, reviews and your location to build trust
  • Keep forms short, and test them inside the Instagram app, not only in Chrome

Use Stories, Highlights and pinned posts as signposts

  • Link stickers in Stories: the easiest way to send people to a specific page. Add a clear instruction such as "Tap for the price list".
  • Highlights: treat them like a mini website menu: Services, Work, Reviews, Prices, How to book, FAQs. Keep them current and add link stickers to the key stories.
  • Pinned posts: pin your strongest work, a reviews post and a short explainer on how to book or order.
  • Captions: end with a specific next step ("Tap the link in bio for sizes and prices" or "DM KITCHEN for the catalogue") rather than a vague "link in bio".

Move DM conversations to WhatsApp, politely

Many customers in India prefer to discuss details, share photos and pay over WhatsApp. When someone asks a genuine question in your DMs:

  1. Answer briefly in the DM first, so they feel heard
  2. Offer WhatsApp for the details: "Happy to send the full catalogue and prices on WhatsApp. Tap this link to start a chat."
  3. Use a WhatsApp link with a pre-filled message, such as "Hi, I saw your Instagram post about...", so you know where the chat came from
  4. Save quick replies for common questions so everyone on the team answers consistently

Only message people on WhatsApp once they've agreed to it. A business profile on Instagram can also show contact buttons, including WhatsApp if you connect your WhatsApp Business number; check the current settings in the app. To make the same route work on your site, see WhatsApp on your business website.

Without tags, visits from Instagram can show up in analytics as a vague referral or even as direct traffic, and you can't tell a bio click from a story click. Add UTM tags to every link you share:

  • utm_source=instagram for everything from Instagram
  • utm_medium=social, used consistently
  • utm_campaign to name the offer or season, such as diwali-offer
  • utm_content to tell apart bio, story and highlight links

Keep the tagged links in a simple sheet and stick to the same naming every time. UTM tags explained covers the details.

Measure what actually becomes business

Followers and likes are easy to see but say little about revenue. Each month, look at:

  • Website visits from Instagram, split by bio, story and highlight links
  • Enquiries from those visits: form submissions, WhatsApp clicks and calls, tracked as events in Google Analytics
  • DM enquiries, and how many moved to WhatsApp or a call
  • How many of these became paying customers

Also ask every new customer "How did you hear about us?" and write it down. After a few months you'll see which kinds of posts bring customers, not just attention, and you can make more of those.
