Most business websites are built with a ready-made theme plus a page builder, and that's often the right choice. But sometimes a custom theme, built specifically for your site and design, is the better investment. Here's how to tell, and what the process looks like when I build one.

What a custom theme is

A theme controls how WordPress displays your content: layouts, templates, styles and editing options. A custom theme is written for one website, containing only what that site needs, instead of a general-purpose theme with hundreds of options you'll never use.

When a custom theme makes sense

• You have a unique design (often from a designer in Figma) that must be implemented precisely
• Performance and Core Web Vitals are a top priority
• Editors need a structured, hard-to-break editing experience
• The site has custom content types like properties, courses, doctors or projects
• It's a long-term site where maintainability matters more than build speed

When it doesn't

• Tight budget or timeline
• A simple brochure site a good lightweight theme handles well
• You want to redesign layouts yourself often, where a page builder gives more freedom

Classic theme or block theme?

The development process

1. Discovery: goals, content, pages, features and who will edit the site
2. Design: a design system in Figma: colours, typography, components and page layouts
